Music Industry Talk

Interview with William "Grit" Laskin

William

What inspired you to write The Stradivari Formula?

In general the ongoing mystery of why Strad's instruments were better than any others. Plus, the odd anomaly that Strad also made some guitars.

What would readers find appealing about it?

They'll develop a deep sympathy for the main protagonists; they'll get caught up in the mystery and intrigue.

What was the hardest part of writing it?

No part was hard. I find writing fiction a sustained and creative high.

How long did it take to write?

First draft took 5 months. But that was after thinking of the plot for 25 years. But I was too busy and had zero extracurricular time, so there was

no chance to write. (Until we transferred Borealis Record-which was about

f love for me, for those 25 years--to True North.)

Did you take inspiration from any authors?

None in particular-I read a lot, all kinds of fiction and non-fiction.

What kinds of books would you write in the future?

I have now begun a thriller series, with an exceptional main character who will appear in each book.

Have you started your next book?

The next one is written already, and is in the hands of my agents. The one to follow that one is currently being written-I am 2/3 of the way though its first draft.

What do you like about folk music?

That it's authentic, down to earth, isn't about making money, but about giving pleasure and through the songs having something important to say.

Who are your favorite folk artists?

How to limit this?! Stan Rogers, Ron Hynes, James Keelaghan, Christine Lavin, Cathy Fink & Marcy Marxer, Ken Whitely, Le Vent du Nord, Laura Smith, Irish Mythen.

What's your process for writing songs?

Haven't written a song for many years. My work with language is now funnelled into the novels.

What's the hardest part of running the Folk Music Awards?

I was the originator of the idea, and my wife and I were the last of the founders to leave the Board, which she and I did in 2016. So, I am no longer involved in the organizing, and thus cannot answer your question.
